Skin problems are one of the top reasons pet owners visit the veterinarian, and Central Texas allergens make the Austin area particularly challenging for sensitive pets. Our team takes a systematic approach to diagnosing and managing chronic skin conditions.
Diagnostic Workup
We begin with a thorough history and physical exam, then use skin scraping, cytology, fungal culture, bacterial culture and sensitivity, and food elimination trials as needed to identify the underlying cause. Many pets suffer from multiple overlapping triggers, and a rushed diagnosis often leads to treatment failure.
Allergy Management
For environmental allergies (atopy), we offer intradermal skin testing, immunotherapy (allergy shots or sublingual drops), and targeted medical management with newer drugs like Cytopoint and Apoquel. For food allergies, we guide owners through proper elimination diet trials lasting eight to twelve weeks.
Ear Disease
Chronic ear infections are frequently linked to underlying allergies. We perform video otoscopy for deep ear examination, culture-guided antibiotic therapy, and ear flushing under sedation when needed. Our goal is to break the cycle of recurring infections rather than simply treating symptoms.
